Winning the Playwin Jackpot : The Winner's Experience
Amolak Singh Hora despised gambling in any form. He ran an online lottery shop to keep hunger at bay but had no time for what he thought was “organised” gambling.
Hora never played it himself — until June 21, 2006.
Four years later, the burly 74-year-old recalls how he was sitting in his hole-in-the-wall shop in Pune that afternoon when he found himself idly punching a ticket out of a small computerised terminal put in by Playwin, the popular online lottery brand of the Mumbai-based Essel Group.
“But I was too embarrassed to put the ticket in my pocket,” Hora recalls. He left it on his table and forgot all about it.
The next morning, Hora learnt from Playwin that a ticket issued from his machine had won the jackpot of Rs 2.03 crore. He was elated, for it meant he would get a commission of Rs 2 lakh.
Suddenly his eyes fell on the ticket that he’d left on his table. It bore the winning numbers.
“I wept with joy,” Hora says, sitting in his row house in an affluent Pune neighbourhood, one of the eight residential units he bought with the prize money in the Maharashtra city.
Winning the lottery has altered life dramatically for the struggling septuagenarian. But he is one of the few willing to speak openly about it. The lives of other winners have changed too — but for some the money has translated into discontent.
Several winners say they have traded peace for affluence. Some feel more vulnerable now, despite the financial muscle they have acquired. And as a jackpot victor puts it, friends morph into foes and strangers, drawn by the scent of lucre, turn into well-wishers when you win a lottery.
Ironically, a sense of personal insecurity often follows the financial security that winning a lottery brings about.The number of overnight millionaires has shot up over the last few years with the advent — and spreading popularity — of online lotteries. Strikingly, the Indian middle class, once dismissive of online lotteries, has taken to them in a big way. Kirti Patel, a physician from the Mumbai suburb of Santa Cruz, is a case in point.
She moved to Mumbai from Surat after her marriage nearly 18 years ago. If there was anything she despaired of, it was of buying “a decent flat in a decent locality” in Mumbai since the prices were prohibitive.
Now, as Patel stands on the balcony of her new three-bedroom flat on Bandra’s upscale Hill Road, the physician attributes her “dream house” to her decision to shed middle-class inhibitions and buy online lottery tickets.
Patel won Rs 7.87 crore in a jackpot in August 2008. Out of the Rs 5.4 crore she received from the lottery company after tax deduction, she paid Rs 3.5 crore for the apartment.“So much money will change anybody’s life,” the physician says.
What Hora — a pious Sikh born in Pakistan but raised in Bengal’s Asansol — finds most “liberating” about winning the lottery is “the money and freedom it provides to go anywhere I like from Amritsar to Nanded,” he says.
But the prize money means different things to different people.
Pannalal Sonawane, a 43-year-old arts graduate who lived off his family’s meager land in Maharashtra’s Jalgaon district, believes it is a “providential” gift from his daughter.
Barely a week before Sonawane won Rs 7.46 crore in an online lottery in May 2005, his daughter Darshana, then 8, wanted an ice cream. Her mother said no, since the family was pressed for money.
“My daughter then told my wife that her Papa would soon get a lot of money and buy her ice cream like her classmates’ dads did,” the father says, tears in his eyes.
